Tom Hardy makes for a fantastic Max, but what makes Fury Road shine the most is the world itself, as it's never been livelier. Nominated for freaking Best Picture, Mad Max: Fury Road is more of a remake than a sequel, and I think that works for the best, as this feels similar to the older films, but also wholly original.

What follows is quite possibly the greatest chase movie ever put to film. Starring Tom Hardy as the titular Max, as well as Charlize Theron as the warrior woman, Imperator Furiosa, and Hugh Keays-Byrne as the series' best villain, Immortan Joe, Fury Road is really Furiosa's story, as she tries to bring Immortan Joe's five wives to safety, banding with Max in the process. Was Mad Max: Fury Road worth its decades long sequel wait after Beyond Thunderdome? Oh, hell yeah. On a different day, I might have put this as the best Mad Max movie, but today, I'm putting it at number two. Plus, it moves at such a brisk pace that you're given little time to breathe, and I mean that in the very best sort of way. Mel Gibson has never been better in the role as a reluctant hero, and it doesn't feel ridiculous like it does in Beyond Thunderdome. This sequel is so action-packed and balls to the wall that it still feels like the freshest version of itself beyond all the imitators. So many other films and stories have pulled from The Road Warrior, that you would think it would feel old, but no. You already know what number one is going to be now, but I seriously considered putting this at the top spot since it never gets old. It really doesn't get much better than this. But, he eventually fights to defend a community against a ravenous gang of lunatics, led by the super imposing, Humungus. In this superior in every way sequel directed by George Miller (they're all directed by him), and starring Mel Gibson, and Kjell Nilsson as Lord Humungus, Max is a broken man who fights to survive and steals this world's most valuable commodity - gasoline - whenever he can. Before the ideals of Immortan Joe and the War Boys start to sound reasonable, it is worth remembering Mad Max: Fury Road’s desert setting becoming a real-life Green Place is not normal, even if it is a touch ironic for the series.(Image credit: Warner Bros.) 2. While global warming has caused temperatures to rise in some areas, it can also cause excessive rainfall, meaning the point of the movies is not disproven by its setting switch. Of course, climate change could be responsible for the rainfall that changed the original Australian desert setting into a verdant area, and maybe this is even evidence of the Mad Max’s franchise anti-pollution message in action.

This was good news for the production of Furiosa, as the Mad Max spinoff is set to be the biggest project in the series so far and as such, will likely involve hauling an even bigger production to similar locales. To be fair, the Namibian Film Commission vehemently denied these claims. However, what compounded this irony was the fact the creators of Fury Road were accused of damaging the Namibian desert’s delicate ecosystem during filming by both a tour guide and an independent environmental report.
It is ironic, given the fact the Mad Max series depicts pollution turning the world into a dusty wasteland, that the production needed to move because the settings of earlier sequels had grown too vibrant. However, the deserts the production hoped to use were hit with atypically heavy rainfall according to a PRI.org article on the topic, leading the filmmakers to move to Namibia instead. Originally Fury Road was - like its upcoming Mad Max spinoff Furiosa - going to be filmed in Australia as the earlier movies did. However, although the movie is about the deleterious effects of human pollution on the environment, the production of Mad Max: Fury Road ironically had to be moved from Australia to Namibia because unexpected rainfall turned the usually arid locations into a real-life Green Place filled with lush vegetation. Related: Mad Max Theory: The Apocalypse Never Happened The rest of the Mad Max franchise was nowhere near as subtle as the first film with this point with The Road Warrior and Fury Road, in particular, having plots that explicitly centered around resource wars taking place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland setting. Mad Max depicted a post-Peak Oil future wherein social bonds were beginning to break down and crime was on the rise, both of which were predicted by scientists who warned about the impact of climate change.
However, beneath this hard-edged story, the original was also a surprisingly prescient piece of sci-fi cinema.
